Sean Swayze, the younger brother of legendary actor Patrick Swayze, has died at the age of 63, adding another painful chapter to a family long familiar with loss.
Sean’s death was confirmed by his son, Jesse Swayze, who told TMZ that his father passed away on December 15 in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the cause of death was an acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and severe metabolic acidosis caused by liver cirrhosis
He is survived by his children—daughter Cassie and sons Kyle and Jesse.
Tributes pour in
Following his passing, family members shared heartfelt messages remembering Sean’s warmth and personality. His cousin, Rachel Leon, posted a tribute on Instagram alongside a photo of Sean wearing a Dirty Dancing-themed shirt.
“I’m heartbroken to share that my cousin Sean Swayze passed away today,” she wrote, adding that the photo was recently taken to promote a Dirty Dancing crawfish-themed event. “He was always fun and full of life.”
Although he never achieved the same level of fame as his brother Patrick, Sean worked in the entertainment industry as a character actor and crew member, with credits including Letters from a Killer.
A family shaped by tragedy
Sean’s death comes more than 16 years after Patrick Swayze died in September 2009 at age 57. Patrick had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in early 2008 and publicly discussed his illness before his death. He remains an iconic Hollywood figure, remembered for roles in Dirty Dancing, Ghost, and Road House. He was married to Lisa Niemi at the time of his passing.
The Swayze family has endured multiple losses over the years. Sean and Patrick’s siblings include actor Don Swayze, 67, and actress Bambi Swayze, 66. Their father, Jesse Wayne Swayze, died in 1982 at 57, and their mother, Patsy Swayze, passed away in 2013 at age 86. Another sibling, Vicky Swayze, died by suicide in 1994 at 45.
Though he lived mostly outside the public eye, Sean Swayze remained connected to his family’s legacy. His death marks another sorrowful moment in a family story defined by creativity, perseverance, and profound loss.
